We just went on a cruise through Alaska on the Holland America Koningsdam. Before we left, I tried to find information out about our room, but room 5126 didn’t have a lot of reviews or pictures that I could find. Ironically, once we got on the ship, I forgot all about wanting to review the room because I was so excited for the cruise. But, I managed to take a couple shots and have some insights that may help you understand if this room is right for you.
The Connecting Door
This was my biggest concern. I even bought noise cancelling tape in case our neighbors were too loud. But, unless we were beside the door, we didn’t hear much. And it looked very sealed. I couldn’t see any lights from the other room through the door.
The door was right off the edge of the bed, which is a very awkward place to put it. There is a small table between the connecting door and the balcony.
This is the only picture I took of the room. It’s looking in from the balcony.
Our neighbor had a cough that was very loud out on the balcony. He would cough and clear his throat every five minutes or so. But we didn’t hear him coughing while inside, and I’m assuming he coughed.
We could here them walking sometimes and little bangs against the wall when they were doing stuff. We also could hear each time they left the room because they let their door slam shut. But overall, I would say it wasn’t as loud as we expected it to be.
We were very quiet just in case, but I ended up getting sick on the cruise ship and coughed the last two nights. Still, we never heard them get louder as a result.
The Slanted Balcony
This was the other concern I had about room 5126 on the Koningsdam, but it worked out well. The balcony is at a slant, and we had a little extra room on one side of the balcony.
We could lean over and see a lot of what was coming up, but the neighbors were always on their balcony, and we would be peeking at them if we did that. We had a great view of the back of the ship. I didn’t take any pictures that way though.
Our other neighbors in 5128 could only see us if we were by the banister or far corner.
We could see about half of their balcony when we looked towards the back, which may be a reason not to get the room 5128 if you want privacy.
But as far as 5126 goes, we were able to hide from everyone’s view if we wanted.
The Lifeboats
The lifeboats are in line with floor 4 on the Koningsdam. So they were directly below us.
I was sitting in the chair against the balcony window when I took the below pic. You can see the lifeboat just below the bottom of our balcony.
I wouldn’t say they caused us any problems. At first, I was concerned about them, but we were able to see everything, including sea otters, whales, iceberg chunks, and more while sitting down on our balcony. They didn’t bother us in the slightest.
It did get a little noisy when the staff were testing the lifeboats to make sure they were working properly.
Room 5126 On The Holland Koningsdam Is Not Good For Star Watching
The biggest issue I had was that floor 3 has lights all over it because it has a walkway around the whole outside of the ship. These lights interfered with my ability to watch the meteor shower that was going on during our cruise.
That was a bummer and would be my biggest complaint about the room.
It’s A Little Noisy With People Walking On 3
A lot of people would walk around the third floor and it could get noisy. In the evening, people were in their cabins or taking in a show and there wasn’t much noise out there though. And the early mornings were very quiet as well.
I don’t know how much that noise would dissipate the higher up you go.
I would say it was bearable and to be expected when you are sharing a cruise ship with 4173 total passengers and crew. The Koningsdam ship was fully booked when we sailed.
