I’ve always enjoy watching both Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale, so it was easy to pick this show to watch when it popped up on Netflix. But, in the end, I felt like I had just wasted my time watching it because of one particular reason that might spoil the show for you if you haven’t watched it. Therefore, if you are planning to watch the show and don’t want to see a spoiler, stop reading this review now.
Buying A Dream Home That Doesn’t Feel Safe
The watcher is based on a true story mixed in with some fiction. For instance, there actually were letters from someone named ‘The Watcher’, but the realtor, played by Jennifer Coolidge, is added to the story to (in my opinion) give it some depth, mystery, and, of course, personality that only she can bring to a story.
Moreover, in real life, the couple apparently doesn’t actually move into the home. According to this article, they bought it and were renovating it when they started getting creepy letters from ‘The Watcher’. And after a few more letters from ‘The Watcher’, they decided they didn’t want to put their kids in harm’s way. Then they tried selling it only 6 months after the letters started.
The story is relatable. We all would fear buyer’s remorse, and that fear would be amplified when buying our dream home that cost millions of dollars. Nobody wants to find out they live next to a crazy person or have someone watching their every move. It destroys any excitement you may feel and makes you wish you hadn’t bought the home in the first place.
That’s why The Watcher is relatable and easily brings you into the story as it’s so easy to imagine going through theย scenario with them.
The Story Was Interesting
The story itself was interesting. While they were getting the letters from ‘The Watcher’ there was a lot of mystery going on with the neighbors, real estate friend, detective, and even the security kid who installed the security system.
I found myself switching suspects every episode, which is what kept me watching The Watcher. I wanted to find out who was writing the letters and how they were caught.
They gave possible motives for all the characters and put in some weird happenings that made these characters even more suspect. For instance, a man who was seen running from their house through underground tunnels or neighbors who were extremely angry and then faked their own death.
The Best Thing About The Watcher In My Opinion
The chemistry between Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale was believable and, honestly, pretty hot at times.
It’s the only reason I don’t totally regret watching the show.
The Reason I Wish I Hadn’t Watched ‘The Watcher’
The ending is pure crap. They sell the house, a new family moves in, and they still obsess about the house and the person writing the letters to them. And the worst thing is that the mystery is never solved.
I hate it when things don’t get tied up in the end, and The Watcher frustrated me so much when they declared that the suspect was never found. Especially since they had teased us with so much crap along the way, such as the tunnels, the music playing in the house, the faking of deaths, the obsessive neighbour, the eager real estate woman, the secret council of invasive and angry neighbors, the neighbors standing in the rain staring at the house and swearing because the daughter is playing music… and so much more.
Why watch a whodunit movie or show where you can’t find out who did it? What’s the point?!
The instant I found out that there was no resolution to the show (which was in the very last scene), I regretted watching it.
Maybe you are different. Maybe you just want to watch the show for watching the family’s story unfold. Maybe you want to come to your own conclusion or mull it over after the show ends.
But I’m not like that. I want to know who did it and why they did it and how they did it. And without that information, the story doesn’t matter to me as much.
In the end, the cast was great. They did their job bringing the story to life. The story was interesting, but the ending was not. They built it up and built it up, and then gave you nothing in the end.
I get enough of nothing in real life. In movies and TV shows, I want to see some resolution, whether good or bad.
That said, they should put this cast together in something else. They really were great together.
It’s got a decent rating on IMDb, so I guess other people liked the ending.
