The New Vegan Dark Chocolate From Purdys Is Just Alright

Purdys has some amazing chocolates – if you eat dairy. They have so many options to choose from. It used to be my go-to gift for my dad because there are many options that he liked from Purdys and it would never disappoint him. And they have seasonal chocolates, like the Apple Crisp Caramels that are everything a chocolate should be – creamy and caramelly and nutty! But as a vegan, it’s a little more restricting.

Purdys Best Vegan Option Is The Sweet Georgia Brown

A while ago, they brought in vegan Sweet Georgia Browns and Vegan Hawaiian Black Salt Caramels.

The Georgia Browns are to die for. They are like what I remember Turtles being like, but better. They have pecans, caramel, and chocolate. And in the perfect balance.

The Hawaiian Black Salt Caramels are OK, but not as good as the Georgia Browns.

The thing about the Georgia Browns is that they are one of those chocolates that you can eat one after the other and not get sick of because they are so good. Everything is in perfect balance – and you get that creamy, nutty, chocolatey, and buttery taste in every bite.

The Hawaiian Black Salt chocolates have a lot of salt and caramel, and one or two are all you need before you get sick and need a break.

New Vegan Dark Chocolates Have Arrived At Purdys

Now, just last Friday, September the 13th of all days (I guess it was International Chocolate Day) , they brought in a new vegan option. A small variety pack of dark chocolate squares with fig, mango, raspberry, and tonka filling.

The woman gave me a sample choice between fig and mango. I chose mango. It was OK. It was alright. It tasted like dark chocolate with mango. And it wasn’t very sweet, just as advertised.

I bought the box because we wanted to try all of them.

One thing to note is that these are very pretty chocolates. What they look like advertised is what you get.

They taste exactly like what they should taste like.

My husband liked the raspberry and fig ones the best. And I liked the Tonka flavor the best. It had a slight vanilla taste, but not too heavy.

The mango was last on our list.

But to be honest, we wouldn’t buy them again. Not over the Sweet Georgia Browns which cost the same at about $36.

Even my mom, who loves everything chocolate, didn’t mind these, but wouldn’t choose them for herself. She didn’t have much to say about them.

We found that they are more fruity than chocolatey. They are not that sweet, so the fruit kind of stands out over the dark chocolate. And we get enough fruit, we don’t want it in our chocolate.

I suggest you ask for a sample before paying $36 dollars for these. The sample you get will be a good representation of what the box of chocolates will taste like.

Purdys, Give Us Some Favorites In Vegan Version!

I asked the woman working at Purdys why they can’t make some favorites, like Hedgehogs, in a vegan version. And she said she had heard that they couldn’t get the recipe just right for the Purdys brand.

I suppose that could be true, but it’s so easy to make vegan anything that I find it hard to believe.

On the page for these vegan dark chocolates, Purdys talks about how fans have been asking for years for more vegan options. And I’m sure they have (as I have), but we want the favorites that everyone else enjoys, not less sweet dark chocolate with fruit flavors.

Or maybe I’m just speaking for myself.

In any case, the Sweet Georgia Browns from Purdys are sill my go-to vegan chocolates anywhere. I crave them. I recommend them if you have a vegan in your life who likes caramel and nuts.

In the future, hopefully Purdys will make some more melt in your mouth chocolatey vegan options that aren’t out there yet for vegans.
