This past weekend, I went on a road trip, and I listened to The Astonishing Power of Emotions by Esther and Jerry Hicks from start to finish. Sometimes I put on an audiobook and find myself consistently having to go back because I didn’t listen to a certain section or chapter, but with The Astonishing Power of Emotions, I listened intently the whole way through. In fact, I engaged. It was easy to directly relate the information in The Astonishing Power of Emotions to my life, and I found myself feeling better and better while listening to it.
I’m Not Totally Sure If I Buy Abraham
I do think that Esther Hicks is a great speaker. And I do use the Money And Law Of Attraction Cards often. But, whether or not she has source speaking through her, and source is the writer of The Astonishing Power of Emotions, I’m not 100% sold on.
What I do know is that the message feels good, so it can’t be bad. It also resonates with me at a deep level, which means it can impact positive change in my life, and I’m ALL about that.
I’ve mentioned this before, but I often think about Jerry Hicks dying and the message that Abraham sends about healing and returning into alignment for perfect health. If anyone could have done that, it would have been Jerry Hicks as he seemed to be so enthusiastic about that. I’m not sure why he still succumbed to his disease if that message was accurate. Unless he was out of balance and couldn’t pull himself back into balance for whatever reason.
I haven’t found a good answer for that yet, and it does make me question everything.
But, feeling good emotions is a part of human life that I believe is powerful. I know it from my own experience and there’s plenty of research to show that when you feel good emotions, such as gratitude and joy, good things happen.
And I do resonate with a lot of messages Esther Hicks puts out. In fact, reading one of her/their books over 20 years ago was what got me on the path of awareness I’m on now.

All of that is what made me so interested in The Astonishing Power Of Emotions.
You Don’t Need To Believe In Abraham To Benefit From The Astonishing Power Of Emotions
The Astonishing Power of Emotions (I listened to the audiobook read by Jerry Hicks as part of the HayHouse Unlimited App) talks about vibrational alignment and how it can help you find relief. It claims that when you are out of alignment, it’s hard to get to where you want to be, if not impossible.
This is taught in all personal development problems I’ve taken at some level.
In fact, when I listen to sermons by T.D. Jakes or Joel Osteen, it’s taught there as well. It’s about embracing your faith, letting go of control, and allowing things to happen. It’s about positive expectations. And it’s about believing there is a power greater than us that loves us and has our back.
That’s what I hear.
In The Astonishing Power Of Emotions, the visual of trying to paddle upstream is often used. The premise used is that you can let go of the oars, stop paddling upstream, and start allowing yourself to float downstream by finding better thoughts about the things you are resisting.
I like this premise. I want to let go of the oars. I want to go with the stream and float along.
In the book, Jerry reads about the various laws of the universe:
- Law of Attraction – This is not something you can practice because it just is. Similar to the law of gravity, the law of attraction is just always working.
- Law of deliberate creation – Pointing your attention and thoughts to the outcome that you desire so that you can have whatever you choose.
- Law of allowing – This is where your personal power lies, and this is what is meant by floating downstream.
The Astonishing Power Of Emotions Teaches You How To Guide Your Thoughts
Essentially what this book does is teach you a process for guiding your thoughts towards the direction of the things you desire. It’s about making the law of allowing work for you.
Much of the book is examples of situations where you are going upstream with your thoughts and emotions and then explanations of how to start going downstream.
I listened to every one of these examples, whether they resonated with me or not because it helped me practice shifting my thoughts.
Essentially, what I found it did was move me from lower vibrational states to higher vibrational states, which is where flow is.
I realized that they think it’s important to go from one state of being to the next without trying to jump too high. For instance, you can’t go from shame to joy with one new thought. Fear would be a more logical step up to move to next.
After finishing the book, I ended up printing off the following picture to help me recognize where I am as I’m going upstream and then work my way through the emotions until I reached a more positive state.
I Broke Down Crying During Some Examples
I knew where I was going upstream with my thoughts because I would break down crying when something deeply touched me.
For instance, in example 30 of The Astonishing Power of Emotions, a pet being sick was talked about. I resonated with this on a big level. I think I’ve been trying to paddle upstream since a few years ago when my dog of 15 years (the dog I got as a single, young woman… the dog that taught me responsibility and pure love) died after a few years of various health conditions. I was devastated when he was sick, when he died, and ever since. Now our Schnauzer has diabetes and it’s compounded my resistance to it. I need to start allowing and stop living in a place of suffering when it comes to this aspect of life.
Or, in example 1, where the example of being given a frightening diagnosis was talked about, I resonated with that too. I don’t have anything life-threatening, but my latest experience with alopecia has been hard to accept as it’s happened so fast. My fear, worry, guilt, and shame around it have been present for a while, and it’s been draining me big time.
5 Thoughts That I Bookmarked In The Astonishing Power Of Emotions
I really got a lot out of The Astonishing Power of Emotions. There are a lot of simple, direct points that resonated with me. Here are 5 of the thoughts I bookmarked. There were many more than these 5, though.
1. Taking Action While Feeling Negative Emotions Only Perpetuates The Negative Situation
I do this all the time. I take action when I’m feeling hurt, guilty, or upset, and things don’t get better.
In my experience, it’s very true that action based on negative emotion never solves problems, makes things happen, or gets me to where I want to be.
2. The Outside Condition Can Change With Effort
If you continue to observe an unpleasant situation making no effort on changing the way you see it, the situation will stay the same and the law of attraction will bring more evidence to support it.
One example for me is this: focusing on how much an affiliate manager is screwing me over only keeps the situation happening and brings more evidence to support it. That’s not what I want, so I need to see things in a different way if I want things to change.
As Jerry reads, you need to feel more prosperous before more money can come.
3. Feel How You Want To Feel
Jerry read from the book that it’s important to decide how you want to feel and then find a way to feel that way now.
This is something I thought about a lot after hearing it.
I know that my tomorrow will be a result of what I think, feel, and do today, so if I want my tomorrow to look a certain way, I have to find a way to make it look that way now. I get that and I’m going to be finding ways to do that.
4. Stop Calculating The Distance
I think a huge part of the problem is that I’m always calculating the distance.
For instance, I know how much debt I need to clear up, and while I want to feel debt-free, I’m ALWAYS calculating the distance to get there, and it’s a bummer.
The thing is I know I will get there, so I need to talk to myself in a way as if what I’m doing is putting me there right now. As if my actions are guaranteeing that I’m there in the future, so I technically can say that I AM there.
It’s a very deep thought that requires a lot of contemplation. But I believe it’s the answer to really making life what you want it.
5. There Are A Variety Of Ways To Live Life
I liked this point inย The Astonishing Power Of Emotions, Basically, Jerry read that while you push against other people’s ideas, you are activating a contradictory vibration in yourself that keeps you from what you want.
You are the creator of your experience, and nobody needs to validate that, just like you don’t need to validate anybody else’s experience.
When you focus on yourself and your experience, you come up with ideas that other people can’t that benefit you and the planet, and the same goes for other people.
We are all different and we all have a different path through life. This is the premise of Lifebook with Jon and Missy Butcher. You need to know your own beliefs in every area of your life before you can live the life you want, and we all have our own north stars and paths in life that can be wildly different.
Spending your time focusing on how other people are doing things wrong while you are doing things right is not beneficial to your life. To have the life you want, full of happiness and joy, it’s important to focus on thinking thoughts, feeling emotions, and taking actions that feel good to you.
Example Of How I Move Myself Up Through The Scale
I have the scale of consciousness posted on my fridge. That way I can look at it and see where I am and where I want to go.
For instance, if I’m feeling shame, I try to talk myself into guilt and then into apathy, grief, fear, desire, etc.
The problem is, it’s easy to go on to ‘yeah, but’ as you try to talk yourself up and then you can end up straight back where you started.
So, I tend to journal to help myself move up through the scale. Then I can keep an outline in place and follow that.
For example, I will write about why I feel shame and then go on to write about why I should feel guilt, apathy, grief, etc.
It’s much easier to stay on course when you are writing stuff down. Your thoughts may wander, but when you put that pen back to the paper, you get back on track. I highly recommend trying it.
Of course, journaling with oracle cards can help too!
The Astonishing Power Of Emotions Is A Good Tool
The bottom line in The Astonishing Power Of Emotions is that when you are feeling bad, your thoughts are bad. Notice what you are thinking or saying, and try to make your next statement something that makes you feel better. Then keep going until you get into a state of Love or Above if you can. That’s where life feels really good because you end up practicing the law of allowing.
The Astonishing Power Of Emotions was a huge benefit to my awareness. I’m going to be thinking about and using this information for a long time to come.
It’s quite similar to The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent, but it was presented differently.
